August Guest Designer: Missy Whidden

by Altenew

Hello, lovely ladies! Welcome to our August Guest Designer post!

Today, we would like to introduce the talented Missy Whidden from Florida. Her style is always fresh and simply breathtaking. She loves doing mixed media and using cut files on her projects and she even goes the distance by sewing on layouts! We are pretty sure you will adore what she has prepared for you here on the Altenew Scrapbook Blog. But, first, let’s learn more about her!

Get to know Missy!

Hi, scrappy friends! I’m Missy Whidden from sunny Florida, USA. I’m married to Marshall and we have two sweet daughters. They are usually the subjects of my scrapbook layouts. When I’m not at my craft desk, I’m at the gym where I’m a fitness instructor.  I’ve been scrapping for about 12 years now, and I can’t get enough of it. My favorite techniques include backing cut files, sewing on layouts and using all kinds of mixed media. I love watercolors, acrylics, gelatos, and most recently distress oxides. I love getting messy! Thank you so much to everyone at Altenew for having me this month!

Missy’s Scrapbook Layouts

For my first layout, I couldn’t wait to use the Classy Stripes Stencil. I used some white cardstock and scraped some modeling paste over the stencil to create some bumpy texture. While that dried, I created some stamped flowers using the Painted Rose Stamp Set and Northern Lights 6 Mini Cube Set. This was my first time using stamps like this, and it was magic watching the flowers come to life! I used the coordinating Painted Rose Die Set to cut them out. Then I fussy cut lots of flowers from the Our Family Scrapbook Collection papers. Once I knew the color scheme, I used some distress oxides from my stash to create some pretty watercolor over the modeling paste background.

I created a big layered cluster of flowers on the side of my photo. I chose a pool photo with lots of blue in the background to contrast against all the pretty pinks. There are so many gorgeous leaves and stems, so I couldn’t resist cutting them out, too.

Here you can see all the fun texture from the stencil and modeling paste. I did add some machine stitching through some of the lines using white thread for added texture. The Our Family Scrapbook Collection has enamel dots, so I scattered some of the pink ones around the page.

I really love the bold blues in this collection. Since I had lots of blue going on in my photo and below it, I added some pink ink at the top here.

I went small and simple with my title. I stamped it using some of the sentiments on the Painted Rose Stamp Set. Then, I added my journaling right below it and then another small fussy cut flower under that.

Let’s check out Missy’s second scrapbook layout!

There are so many gorgeous florals in the Our Family Scrapbook Collection and I couldn’t resist starting my second layout with this giant flower cluster. I fussy it from a patterned paper and ran it off the upper left corner of the page. I used a light blue sheet of cardstock from my stash as my base. There are so many bold colors in the flowers and I thought the light blue really made everything pop. I used the Classy Stripes Stencil again with modeling paste. It is officially my new favorite stencil! For the background, I used some of the Northern Lights 6 Mini Cube Inks. I stamped them onto some plastic packaging and watered them down to add some splatters. To add some darker tones, I did bring in some distress oxides and gelatos from my stash.

Look how gorgeous this is! Honestly, I just stared at it for a quite a while before cutting it out. I used a black and white photo to tuck under some of the leaves over on the right side. All of these beautiful colors are so pretty. And the stripes on the background really gave the page some nice texture.

Again, I went crazy with fussy cutting! I pulled out more floral and leaf papers from Our Family Scrapbook Collection and cut bits and pieces out to tuck in here and there. I also used some of the wood veneer leaves from the collection. One of my favorite things to add is tangled up thread. It gives pops of color as well as texture.

When I added ink to the background, I tried to make sure the colors weren’t the same. For example, I added blue on the background here since there wasn’t blue in the flowers here. I like to spread color around the page.

These leaves and flowers are great for dimensional projects. The key is to not glue everything down completely flat. Leave some of it unglued so you can bend the edges up and let it create some depth.

I have another video tutorial that you can watch here or in HD on Altenew’s YouTube channel:

These layouts were so much fun to make! The products made them come together rather quickly and that’s saying something for me since I’m a slow scrapper. I hope you enjoyed these and gained some inspiration from them! Thanks again to the Altenew team for having me this month!
